Elizabeth Lee writes: Levi Wilson Pace, Jr. was my father's oldest brother. When I was a little girl, my father always had a picture of a handsome WWII pilot up high on the bookshelf where no one could reach it. My brothers and sister and I would sometimes whisper about it, pointing to it, talking about "Uncle Lee", my father's brother who had died in World War II. There were 6 children in all and my father was the second to the youngest. He grew up as a small shadow in the footsteps of his older brother. Lee was 6 years older and my Dad worshipped him, did everything he did, even practiced walking like him! When the telegram came that said Lee had been killed in an airplane accident, he felt as if his own life had ended. Fifty years later, my Father felt an urgency about compiling a history of his brother. Lee had no children, no one to remember him. My Father's greatest desire was that his brother not be forgotten. He started writing stories and gathering information. As my father was working on this book, he would talk to me, reading a passage, and stop. I would look at him and he would be overcome with emotion. It had been 50 years and the emotions were still so close to the surface. Life is like that. 50 years may have passed, but it seemed like it was just yesterday. |
