Many have written requesting a good pattern for formal wear, and NC#302 still is my favorite. It can be dressed up or down easily depending on the fabric choice and it is so easy to sew. My daughter was recently married and in selecting simple modest dresses for my family to wear, I kept going back to this pattern. My daughter-in-law was expecting and I also needed a dress for my 12 year old daughter. I was a bit short on time and we hunted through the stores for reasonably priced modest dresses in a lavender color. There was just nothing to be found. Finally I had my daughter in law try an NC#302 dress from my collection. She really liked it and it fit her nicely, even when expecting. Most importantly, it was simple enough that I had time to sew it! I struggled to find fabric that would work with my daughter’s color scheme but I finally found this beautiful stretch eyelet from fabric.com. It is $8.95 a yard and each dress only took about 1 1/3 yards to make. I made both dresses in one evening. Luciana wanted a more fitted look, so she added a tie belt just under her bust-line. For Luciana’s dress I used the size Small through the neck and shoulders and added extra width at the side seams. Lauren’s dress was an X-Small. She also wore a sash under her bust-line. This fabric is a little different and had a vertical stretch, so we “ruffled” the edge of the sleeve with the serger and created a simple rolled hem. We hemmed the lower edge of the dress in a traditional manner. The overall effect was very lovely.
